How To Buy House Shutters
Exterior house shutters are made with a variety of different styles and materials. There are vinyl shutters and wooden shutters. Both can make your home all the more attractive. When you are purchasing shutters for your home, make sure that you take a look at the different styles and types of shutters that are on the market before you make your decision as this is one that will most likely last the lifetime of the home.
Buying shutters is not difficult. Take a look at shutters in magazines or in homes in your area to decide what styles you like as well as materials and colors. Once you have an idea what you like, you can make some decisions and then be ready to order your shutters for installation.
Shutter Styles
There are two different types of styles when it comes to exterior house shutters. There are the narrow paneled shutters that have small louvers and are basically the more traditional shutters that you see on homes. There are also the larger louvered shutters that are known as plantation type shutters. Take a look at both styles before making a decision.
If you are unsure, again take a look at homes that you admire that have shutters. You can ask your local millwright about the style of shutters if you are unsure.
Shutter Finish
If the shutters are wood, you are going to have to have them either stained or painted. Staining is the process of painting on a transparent color and then wiping it off. You can still see the grains of the wood with staining. Painting gives the shutters an opaque look. Again, the finish depends on personal taste. You will have to make sure that they are finished with a sealer, however, whether they are painted or stained.
If the house shutters are vinyl, they do not need to be painted and cannot be stained. Vinyl shutters are ready to hang and are maintenance free.
Unit Sizes
The size of your house shutters naturally have to reflect the size of the window units. Although they will most likely never be closed, the shutters should look as thought they can be closed and shut up the window entirely. This means that the shutters should be large enough to cover the entire window. Window sizes should be measured for custom shutters so that the specifications can be met. Also remember that you can use double tiered or single tiered shutters, both of which make a difference.
Price
Check out the prices of manufacturers in your area as well as those online. You will most likely get shutters from a millwright, so visit any in your area that make shutters. You can often get house shutters at a better price online than offline because you do not have to pay for sales commissions or overhead. Purchasing shutters from the manufacturer can save you money. Just remember to measure carefully and ask the customer service center questions before ordering the shutters.
